Who wants another state? Now's the time...

Fact:
The Central government of India has decided to give into the demands for a separate Telengana state, finally deciding on the decades old Telengana issue. For years, there has been a demand for a separate Telengana, carved from the southern province of Andhra Pradesh.

The Political Game:
"At the present we leave the decision to the high command": Congress leader Geeta Reddy

A high-level meet over the Telangana issue was convened at 10, Janpath, the residence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and participated by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, and Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily in the national capital.

Question:

Why? Is the Congress high command the right authority to determine the division of existing states in the Union of India? Is it really a constitutional authority with powers and if not, why was Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah in New Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi to discuss the Telangana issue? Why are our politicians sending "letters of request" to Sonia Gandhi to decide on whether a state should be bifurcated? One question you may ask is - Where the hell was our Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh? Well, of course, he returned from his tour of Russia on December 9 and the same evening the decision for Telangana was announced. One wonders how much time a jet lagged, 77 year old person was given to decide on issues of national importance? Or was it that his absence is really not important since the powers to be had already made up their mind?

What's Next:
Besides the Central government proving that it has weak knees (yet again - be it internationally or within the country), this decision is bound to stoke dormant separatist aspirations across the country. A demand for a separate Gorkhaland has already been raised (with a 96 hour bandh announced). One wonders how many pieces would India be divided in to until no one "feels neglected". Have we not learnt anything from how a bunch of traders from the East India company were able to easily conquer our (great?) nation (or, were they really responsible for bringing disparate, quarreling kingdom states in to one umbrella called India?). What is happening to us as a nation? Where are we really headed with so much confusion, hatred and dirty politics AND a clear lack of political participation from the common man, including myself.

i am saddened by this turn of events., reasons outlined below :
1)stupid marathis bringing youngerl thackeray to power by giving him 11 seats in the local election.
2)stupid bal thackeray saying that for a muslim to be PM, he ahs to give in to the ram mandir in ayodhya thingie...
3) instead of consolidating and giving better governance with the means available now, they are spliiting to create one more state, what do we get from that, more BABUS ->more ministers ->more corruption

When we should look as an Identity of ourselves as Indians, we are creating more states, havent 30+ states already been created in the name of language, tomorrow, gorkhaland should be split from Sikkim... and this is just a start,
then give Assam away under threat from ULFA..

I am just deeply deeply hurt that a single man, KCR, a corrupt politician can cause a state to break.
I wish all these politicians go on a hunger strike and DIE!!
maybe thats how we can get some fresh blood in our political process.....

Asking for better governance, I can understand, but asking for a separate state for what???
He wants a separate state for better governance???
stupidity on COngress's part .
I didnot want to believe it , but now its a fact, Terrorists dont need to stirke our country to break it, We Indians are good at doing it ourselves!!!

awake out of dormancy and come up with such a gem! You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. Its when the PM is away the babus will play. After all, he never really wielded much power anyway. Its the puppet-master who decides the fate of us all directly or indirectly.
Its amazing how one politician's "fast unto death" can do so much. If only people believed in causes that weren't so, should I say, personal. Imagine what all we could have achieved if we knew about this secret key. Taxes too high? No problem, the whole country moves to a fast unto death (most of the country lives like that anyway). Too many potholes? FInd your friendly politician, grease him up a bit so that he can live off that fat while he goes to his fast.
I think the country is trying too hard to be like the US, and is going about it the wrong way. 25 states? We're only half the US. 25 more to go.

I feel bad for the naxals. All that ideology and violence gone to waste. They should organise a group fast I think.

As for Telangana and other, similar aspirations - the more the merrier I say. Please note that Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh & Uttarakhand are doing considerably better than their respective parent states.

Hi ujjwal,

Central Govt has decided to " initiate" the process of forming a new state. Its an empty promise and everyone knows that it was primarily to make KCR withdraw from fast and defuse the situation. There were several intelligence reports which suggested that naxalites were behind these violent protests.

Infact, that is the main reason why KCR was forced to continue the fast.I was in hyderabad over the weekend and things were really out of control.

Congress high command cannot decide whether a new state can be formed. But, it can decide if the ruling state congress should even pass a resolution as this is a matter of national implications.

Enough has been said about the exact role of manmohan Singh, etc .. I will not venture into that area. Or even why AP CM has to get approval from Sonia on every small matter.

Having seen the situation personally,I would only say that govt had limited options and this was probably the right thing to do. 95 MLAs have already resigned.. just wait and watch the drama
