"Stephen Colbert, the mock pundit for the Comedy Central show The Colbert Report recently contacted the National Portrait Gallery hoping to donate this portrait of himself from his show. While this triple portrait is not one that would typically be accessioned into the Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection, NPG agreed to go along with the joke and hang the portrait for a limited time.In episodes of The Colbert Report that aired on January 10, 14, and 15, 2008, Colbert tries to convince the Smithsonian that he should be considered a national treasure. He attempts to donate his portrait to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, but the museum’s director suggests that perhaps Colbert should speak to the National Portrait Gallery. Finally, after much "discussion," the director of the National Portrait Gallery finds an appropriate place to hang Colbert’s portrait, in between the bathrooms and above the water fountain.
- View the episodes on the Comedy Central Web site.
- See photos of Stephen Colbert’s portrait, and share your own, on the National Portrait Gallery’s Flickr group.
This portrait will only be here through April 1, so refresh yourself at the drinking fountain while contemplating this portrait of Colbert while you can."

According to some estimates, the number of visitors to the gallery has increased by 150%. Personally, I heard a lot of people talk about their multiple visits. For the ones like me into history, the 2 guided tours every day of the entire gallery is a must see. One should call in before hand to check out the timings - the lady at the reception said that they change every day.

the guy's has a cult following. If I remember correctly there was some online petition(on facebook maybe ?) to get him nominated for the Presidential elections.
Actually, he tried to get his name on the Democratic ticket from his state of South Carolina. However, it was felt that since he was running nationally and his electability was in doubt, he never made it on the list.
He paid $2500 to even go through this process of review.
I checked up the wikipedia article on him. He intended to run on both the Republican & Democratic fronts but backed from from the Republican platform because of the fees for the SC primary. The democrats realized the guy would never be a serious candidate.
I was partially correct & incorrect about the facebook part in my previous comment - http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/10/30/the_colbert_clan_12_million_st.html
That group has 1,369,167 members at the moment .. talk about jobless people :-D
True - the Reps have a much larger fee than the Dems.
As for jobless people, I would partially attribute it to his popularity and partially to people trying to make a point here on Facebook on the politics in this country.

Alright now - this post seems to have gone from Steven to me. I said I am fat and I said I will work on it (beginning this Saturday). So, as I promised in another post, let me work on it and show you guys results rather than defending a lifestyle where I need to sit for 12 hours a day.
